AI SEO vs Traditional SEO, What Actually Changes for a Contractor

Most of AI SEO looks like local SEO done well. Here is what actually changes for a contractor, what stays the same, and what is mostly hype.

AI SEO vs Traditional SEO, What Actually Changes for a Contractor

Most of the foundation is identical, and AI SEO adds a layer on top of it rather than replacing it. Google Business Profile, reviews, real service pages, clean citations and a fast site still do the heavy lifting. What is new is being named consistently on the sources AI tools read, answering the exact questions a homeowner types, and measuring whether you show up in AI answers instead of only checking map rankings.

Here's the short version:

  • The groundwork for AI search optimization is the same groundwork that wins Google, so nobody has to start over.
  • The new work is source presence and question coverage, getting mentioned and cited on the places AI engines pull from.
  • The new measurement is AI answer tracking, because a ranking report does not tell you whether ChatGPT named you.

What Stays the Same

If someone tells you AI changed everything, ask them what they would remove from a normal local SEO plan. The honest answer is almost nothing.

Homeowners still open Google. They still tap the map pack, read reviews, and call two or three companies. A painting contractor without a complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of reviews is invisible in that moment, and no amount of AI work fixes it. The same is true for an HVAC company with one thin page trying to cover six cities, or a general contractor whose site takes forever to load on a phone in a driveway.

The core list has not moved:

  • A Google Business Profile that is managed, posted to, and kept current with photos.
  • Reviews coming in regularly and replies on the ones you get.
  • Service pages that cover one service each, and location pages that cover one city each.
  • Citations that are clean and consistent across directories.
  • Fast load times, clear internal linking, structured data, and calls to action a person can actually find.

That is the work we do for every client regardless of whether AI is part of the conversation, and it is what Local SEO means in practice. If you want the longer version of how that foundation gets built, our guide to generative engine optimization in plain English walks through how the two layers connect.

What Is Actually New

Three things genuinely change.

Being named on the sources AI reads

AI answers are assembled from sources. Across more than 70,000 AI citations we have tracked for clients, Houzz and Reddit come up as cited sources far more than anything else, followed by directories and best of articles. That tells you where the work goes. It is not about stuffing keywords into your homepage. It is about your business existing, accurately, on the pages an AI engine trusts enough to cite when a homeowner asks who to hire.

Answering the exact question, not the keyword

Traditional SEO chased short phrases. People type full questions into AI tools. A homeowner does not search "HVAC San Diego." They ask which company to call when a system is short cycling in July, or whether a small painting crew can handle stucco on a coastal home. Pages that answer those questions directly give an AI engine something to quote.

Measuring answers, not just positions

We track AI visibility for clients across six AI engines every month. A set of real customer prompts for the client's trade and cities, run on a schedule, recording whether the business was named, where it appeared in the answer, and which sources that answer cited. Coastal Comfort, an HVAC and plumbing client in San Diego, went from 2 percent to 43 percent of tracked AI answers naming them. You cannot manage that number without measuring it.

What Is Hype

Some of what gets sold as AI SEO is repackaged basics with a new label. A few things worth being skeptical about.

Nobody can guarantee a spot in an AI answer. The answers vary by phrasing, by engine, and by day. What you can do is improve how often you are named and track it honestly.

AI written content by itself is not a strategy. Volume without specificity reads the same as everyone else's volume, and it gives an engine nothing unique to cite.

There is no secret AI ranking signal to buy. The inputs are the same inputs, applied to a wider set of places.

And AI has not replaced Google for contractors. A general contractor who abandons the map pack to chase chatbot mentions will have a quieter phone, not a louder one.

AI SEO and Traditional SEO Side by Side

Traditional SEO AI SEO
Main surface Google search results and the map pack AI generated answers across multiple engines
What the user does Types a short phrase, scans a list Asks a full question, gets one recommendation set
Content target Keyword phrases by service and city Exact customer questions, answered directly
Off site work Citations and directory consistency Mentions and citations on the sources AI engines read most
Technical work Speed, structured data, internal linking Same, plus structured data and an llms.txt file for AI crawlers
How you measure Rank positions and map placement Whether you were named, where in the answer, and which sources were cited
What it replaces Nothing Nothing. It sits on top

The point of the table is that the right column depends on the left column. The sites that get cited in AI answers tend to be the sites that were already clear, fast and well organized.

How We Run Both on One Plan

We are TwentyOne Solutions, a local SEO and AI visibility agency for contractors and the trades, based in San Clemente, California and founded by Tyler Huff. We work with painters, HVAC and plumbing companies, paving and concrete contractors, fence and deck builders, pressure washing companies, remodelers, custom home builders and general and commercial contractors. All the work is done remotely, and every ranking scan covers the client's own service area.

There is no separate AI product to buy. Local SEO Lite at $499 a month includes AI visibility tracking alongside Google Business Profile management, blog posts, listings management across 50 or more directories and missed call text back. Local SEO Full at $979 a month adds AI citation placements, listicle placements, backlinks and review request integrations. Intro SEO starts at $279 a month for the Google Business Profile foundation. Every plan includes a custom website with service and location pages, and every site ships with structured data and an llms.txt file. All of it is on our Pricing page, because we publish our numbers instead of making you sit through a call to hear one.

Plans start with a six month commitment so the work has time to compound, then run month to month. SEO plans include a three month out. If there is no measurable improvement by month three, you can stop. You own the domain, the website, the content and the reviews, and they stay yours if you leave.

If you want to see where you stand before deciding anything, our AI Search Visibility work starts with a free visibility report that shows exactly where your business shows up on Google and in AI answers across your service area.

FAQs

Do I need to stop doing traditional SEO to do AI SEO?

No. The foundation is the same work, and AI SEO depends on it. If your Google Business Profile is thin or your service pages are vague, that is the first problem to solve. AI visibility work layers on after that and uses the same assets.

How do you know whether AI tools are recommending my company?

We run a set of real customer prompts for your trade and your cities across six AI engines on a schedule every month. The scan records whether your business was named, where in the answer it appeared, and which sources the answer cited. That last part tells us where the next round of work should go.

Which matters more right now for a contractor, Google or AI answers?

Google still sends more calls for most trades, so it gets the bulk of the attention. AI answers are growing and they are winnable, and the work overlaps heavily with Google work. Treating them as one program is cheaper and more effective than treating them as two.

Does AI SEO cost extra on top of a normal plan?

Not with us. AI visibility tracking is included starting at the Local SEO Lite plan, and AI citation and listicle placements are included in Local SEO Full. There is a one time setup fee and a custom website with service and location pages in every plan.

What results have you seen on the search side?

Ceiling Pro is the number one ceiling company on Google across the Bay Area, and American Curb Appeal went from invisible to top three citywide. West Coast Washers, a commercial pressure washing client, ranks in the top three across Los Angeles month after month. New clients generally start near zero on lead volume and climb as rankings take hold.
