Where AI Gets Its Answers, The Sites ChatGPT and Perplexity Actually Cite for Contractors

When ChatGPT or Perplexity recommends a contractor, it is usually repeating what it read on a handful of third party sites, and across more than 70,000 AI citations we have tracked for clients, Houzz and Reddit come up far more than anything else. Directories and best of articles follow behind them. That pattern holds across trades and across cities. It also means getting named in AI answers is less about guessing at prompts and more about being present and quotable on the sources these tools already trust.

Here's the short version:

  • AI answers are built from sources, and the sources repeat. Houzz and Reddit lead, then directories and best of articles.
  • Your own website matters, but it is rarely the only thing cited. The answer usually leans on places where other people discuss you.
  • The work is practical: a clean profile presence, real participation where homeowners ask questions, and consistent listings.

How We Know Which Sources Get Cited

We track AI visibility for clients across six AI engines every month. It is not a one time check. We build a set of real customer prompts for the client's trade and cities, run them on a schedule, and record three things: whether the business was named, where in the answer it appeared, and which sources the answer cited.

That last part is the useful one. Rankings tell you where you stand. Citations tell you why. When the same handful of domains shows up again and again behind the recommendations in a market, you stop guessing about what to fix. One HVAC and plumbing client in San Diego, Coastal Comfort, went from 2 percent to 43 percent of tracked AI answers naming them, and the path there ran straight through the sources those answers were already pulling from.

If you have never seen this data for your own business, it is worth looking before you spend anything. We cover how AI search differs from the Google work most contractors already know in our breakdown of AI SEO vs traditional SEO for contractors.

The Four Sources That Keep Showing Up

Houzz

Houzz gets cited because it is structured the way an AI model likes. Projects, photos, locations, service categories and reviews all sit in predictable places, which makes it easy to read and easy to summarize. For remodelers, builders, hardscape contractors and painters, a thin or abandoned Houzz presence is a missed citation every time a homeowner asks for a shortlist.

Reddit

Reddit gets cited because it reads like real people talking. Threads where homeowners ask who to hire in a specific city are exactly the kind of content these tools reach for when a prompt sounds like a request for a recommendation. The language in those threads matches the language in the prompt.

Directories

After Houzz and Reddit, general and trade directories come up constantly. They are not glamorous, but they are consistent, and consistency is the point. When your name, category, service area and phone number match across many listings, AI tools have an easier time treating those facts as settled.

Best of articles

Listicles and roundups get cited because they already answer the question. A page titled around the best contractors in a city is pre shaped for a prompt asking for the best contractors in a city. If your business is not on any of them, there is nothing for the model to pull.

What A Contractor Actually Does About Each One

Source Why AI cites it What you do
Houzz Structured projects, photos, reviews and location data that are easy to read Fill out the profile completely, keep project photos current, keep the service area accurate, keep reviews coming in
Reddit Reads like genuine homeowner discussion, matches how people phrase prompts Participate in local and trade threads with your business identity disclosed, answer questions, do not pose as a customer
Directories Repetition and agreement on your core business facts Get listed broadly, then keep name, category, phone and service area identical everywhere
Best of articles Already formatted as an answer to a recommendation question Earn placements on legitimate roundups covering your trade and city

On Reddit specifically, the only version of this that works long term is the disclosed version. Say who you are and what you do, then answer the question that was asked. Helpful, plainly written answers from an identified local contractor hold up. Fake homeowner accounts recommending your own company do not, and they put the account and the mentions at risk. The goal is to be the useful reply in a thread a model later reads, not to manufacture praise.

Your own site still does work in this chain. Every site we build ships with structured data and an llms.txt file for AI crawlers, so when a model does come to your pages, your services, cities and contact details are not buried in images or scripts. Clear service and location pages, internal linking and fast load times help here for the same reason they help on Google. If your site is the weak link, the fixes in the top website mistakes contractors make are the right place to start.

How This Fits Into A Plan

AI visibility is not a separate project bolted onto the side of local search. The same assets feed both. Listings management across 50 plus directories, blog posts, Google Business Profile activity and review replies all produce the material AI answers get built from.

Our Local SEO plans reflect that. Local SEO Lite at $499 a month adds AI visibility tracking, listings management across 50 plus directories, blog posts and missed call text back on top of profile management. Local SEO Full at $979 a month doubles the content volume and adds AI citation placements, listicle placements, backlinks and review request integrations. Intro SEO is $279 a month for profile management, citation cleanup and monthly scans. Full details sit on our Pricing page, because we publish our numbers instead of making you sit through a call to hear one.

FAQs

Does my website matter if AI mostly cites other sites?

Yes. Your site is where the facts about your services, cities and contact details are confirmed, and it is what a homeowner lands on after the AI names you. The difference is that your site alone rarely gets you named. The third party sources are what put you in the answer.

Can I just post on Reddit about my own company?

You can participate, as long as you disclose that you are the business. Answer questions people actually asked, in plain language, with your identity clear. Posing as a customer to recommend yourself is the version that backfires.

How long before AI answers start naming us?

It builds over time, which is why our plans start with a six month commitment before going month to month. SEO plans include a three month out, so if there is no measurable improvement by month three, you can stop.

How do you know whether AI is mentioning us at all?

We run a set of real customer prompts for your trade and cities across six AI engines every month and record whether you were named, where in the answer you appeared, and which sources the answer cited. That same tracking is what tells us which sources to work on next.
